We Need HUMAN Music
A Conversation on Music, Art, Technology, and the importance of being Human.
Watch/Listen to our Conversation
Watch the convo on YouTube, or, for easy listening, you can stream the audio through your phone either on your browser or the Substack App
I met Chris Hedden way back in 2014 when I was releasing my first batch of music under a different name. It was a different time: social media feeds showed only people you knew; Spotify had playlists curated only by humans.
“Influencers” and “Algorithms” were not part of the lexicon.
What we had back then were bloggers. We had music journalists—dedicated listeners, writers, fans—who solicited submissions, spent hours searching the airwaves, and listened to a ton of music all in service of sharing what they found.
But first, have you heard my latest EP
“…Not All By Itself?”
We talk a lot about the 4-song EP and how it was recorded live to an analog tape machine—pops, cracks, and all.
The conversation jumps off from there…so give it a listen!
I’m excited to say, that tradition is back. Writers and curators here on Substack have driven the bulk of my music listening and discovery for months.
And what a delight it was to re-connect with Chris, who ported his old Wordpress over to Substack a few months back and has been churning out deep reporting and album reviews of everything from Warren Zevon to indie artists like your truly.
We sat down (virtually) for the first time in over a decade and chatted about my new acoustic EP, the interplay of art and technology, the modern music industry, and how we all can carve out places for doing what we love in this crazy day and age.
Give it a listen and let us know what you think!
-David

well done. my first album was analog and I've grown to miss that sound. that gear has gotten expensive though...
I write about the human music business. I‘ll sub you if you sub me😁
